The Windiana concert band would like to thank all of our patrons for a wonderful season! In addition to our terrific regular season concerts in November and February at Valparaiso University, we joined forces with the Chamber Concert Band and the Confucious Intitute at Valparaiso University on September 17th at Pritzker Pavillion in Millinuim Park in Chicago where we joined forces with over 1000 other performers from the US and China to perform a concert themed "Friendship Lasts Forever" to an estimated audience of over 10,000, and on May 5th, Windiana again joined with the VU Chamber Concert Band in a performance of "Stubernic Fantasy" by John Ford with composer John Ford, John Coller, and Jared Coller as our guest marimba soloists. A challenging piece written in several unusual meters with three marimba solists all playing on the same marimba- at the same time. In December 2018 Winiana will be doing a concert tour of Italy and Malta.
Last but not least, we will again join forces with the Chamber Concert Band at Valparaiso University in our fourth collaboration with Dutch composer Johan de Meij, who achieved world fame with his Symphony No. 1, "The Lord of the Rings". Miestro de Meij has been commissioned to write a new symphony to be premiered under the baton of the maestro himself at Valparaiso University on November 3, 2018 during The Past, Present, and Future of Tolkien Scholarship international conference. The new work, his Symphony No. 5 is entitled "Return to Myddle Erde", ("Return to Middle Earth") and is scored for large wind orchestra, soprano solo and choir, and again like his Symphony No. 1 is inspired by the mythological world of J.R.R. Tolkien. We hope to see you again next season as we continue to strive to perform symphonic concert band literature at the highest possible level.
